Description

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite won an Academy Award for providing a profound commentary on class in South Korean society, though this award demonstrates the film's relevance to American culture as well. Many well-crafted visual metaphors – especially images of ascending/descending – help reinforce the film’s central message. One metaphor, however, has gone relatively unnoticed: Food. This essay will seek to provide a close reading, including the creation of a "Culinary Compendium," of food and how its representation symbolically supports the film's thesis.
