Description

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a critical component of safe, evidence-based, and efficient health care practice. Due to limitations from the Ohio Department of Higher Education as well as federal accrediting bodies, challenges are faced when integrating IPE as a separate required curriculum into health care programs. This is especially true at the community college level. The Owens Community College (OCC) IPE Leadership team was tasked to create an IPE experience for the graduating students of the School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) for Spring 2021 in a virtual format due to the ongoing pandemic. The IPE team was aware that there would be challenges from a student learning perspective due to the virtual nature of the event and the complexity of the content. The objectives included students’ understanding of the roles and responsibilities and scopes of practice of other healthcare professions, and recognition of the importance of interdisciplinary team care for patients. Twelve SNHP associate degree programs were involved committing over 200 students to participate. Blackboard Collaborate was utilized with breakout rooms. Three or more facilitators were present in the virtual rooms to facilitate discussion and student collaboration in the patient’s case (presented via slideshow) as it unfolded with various reports, diagnostics, and transitions in care. Each program within the SNHP was highlighted through critical thinking and application of questions posed to the group as the case progressed. Students and facilitators completed pre- and post-event surveys to assess their perceived knowledge and learning. Feedback was positive from all involved, and the event was well received. This event highlighted challenging objectives that were successfully met to deliver effective student participation in an IPE in a virtual environment.
