Abstract
The purpose of this action research is to examine alternative, summative assessments with a focus on instructional approaches – particularly oral and visual assessments. My aim was to determine the benefits of implementing alternative assessments. The participants are students in a seventh-grade mathematics classroom who chose their assessment and completed open responses.
