When Ray Browne founded the department of Popular Culture in conjecture with the Pop Culture Library and Center for the Study of Popular Culture, he did so with the belief that Pop Culture Studies would create a more democratic society. The intersection between his philosophy and the lived reality of Bowling Green, highlight the inherent class consciousness within Pop Culture Studies and tell a history of how that class consciousness was and is rejected from the discipline. This presentation aims to bring back class consciousness into the discipline, arguing that class cannot be separated from popular culture without erasing the legacy of Ray Browne.
