Description

How do we engage faculty in the implementation of LS into their pre-methods/methods classrooms?

Our lesson study (LS) team is working to integrate LS into our pre-methods courses and education curriculum. LS research teams work collaboratively to study, plan, conduct, and reflect on lessons to overcome a struggle within instruction or student learning, and the process can help promote professional collaboration that helps strengthen and support instructional practice. Furthermore, the LS process models collaborative practices to the teacher candidates.

During LS, faculty teams research their problem-area or question they have, spend time studying the problem, develop a lesson plan with team members, and conduct the lesson while the other team members engage in observations specifically focused on the problem being addressed. Then, the final stage of reflection encourages faculty members to analyze their instructional practice and student learning to then make revisions and modifications to their lesson for future instruction.

LS PD encourages collaboration among faculty while strengthening instructional practice and student learning throughout the process. Furthermore, LS allows teacher educators to come together to ask questions: What are the current challenges teacher educators (TEs) are having, and how can we, as a team, help study it to implement instructional strategies to overcome the struggle? By working through the LS process, teacher educators can begin building professional networks that sustain and nurture their practice.

During this session, teacher educators will discuss the lesson study process, brainstorm challenges they want to overcome with a team of colleagues, and begin conceptualizing the use of lesson study within their school and/or classrooms.
