Teaching Theory Through Cinema: A Video Essay on the Mirror Stage in Film
Abstract
Critical theory can often be difficult for students to understand, at first, due to the challenging nature of most theorists' writing. This project explores the possibilities for teaching critical theory through film, with a specific focus on Jacques Lacan's theory of the mirror stage. Through the films Toy Story, Coraline, Fight Club, and Mulholland Drive, this video explores the form that such alternative and supplementary methods of teaching theory might take and the techniques they might utilize.
