Abstract
Acid rock’s rise to the top was aided by unprecedented times in American history. A collision of forces such as anti-war sentiment, youth rebellion, and the emergence of lysergic diethylamide exploded into a generation changing era of peace, love, violence, and above all else, music. Through the early years of acid rock's dominance, the outspoken virtues of the artists were held dear to their fans and listeners across the country, who never had to question its authenticity. Acid rock’s popularity was unlike anything the American people had ever seen, with major weekend long events which captivated the media and the hearts of our youth. However, the festivals which gave rise to the acid rock movement also exposed the cracks in the philosophy and ideology of those who associated themselves with the genre. This project aims to connect three different factors’ contributions to not only the rise, but the fall of a genre which took the world by storm. Through musical innovation, political expression, and commercialization of the product, acid rock’s time at the top became a tragic tale of lack of authenticity and solid standing ground.
