Description

Disability and Accessibility in the Voice Studio is the first collection of its kind, bringing together seventeen singers and voice teachers to share personal and professional experience with disability. The editors envision it as an entry point to disability for students and instructors of voice pedagogy courses, as well as for singers and teachers. It is designed to allow users to choose from a variety of topics presented in diverse styles, and in multiple learning modes—and in the process it illustrates important forms of accessibility. The overall purposes of the resource include: 1) to support a larger movement toward the development of accessible pedagogical practices; 2) to offer space for disabled singers and voice teachers to share their lived experiences, and their strategies for navigating learning and professional environments that tend to exclude them; and thus 3) to foster the recognition of possibility among disabled voice students and their teachers. The editors hope that the collection will open doors to further conversation about inclusivity and the incredible diversity of singing bodies.
