Abstract
“Diversity” is a buzzword across today’s educational, professional, and office settings. With so many looking to “diversify” their fields, it is important to note the endless ways in which people are diverse. From culture to religion to age to gender to race, and the intersectionality of them all, there has been a push to increase diversity as a means to better serve individuals in minority groups. While all forms of diversity are important, as is their intersectionality, the purpose of this project is to focus on racial disparities. There is no question that racial disparities exist across many roles we participate in. One area research exists in is racial disparities within specific healthcare fields. Demographic data shows us that underrepresented minorities are less likely to fill the roles of certain healthcare professionals, and many have speculated as to why. The goal of this project is to hone in on experiences that racially diverse students and professionals endure which either lead them to a career in healthcare or discourage them from the field. Through a series of qualitative interviews and quantitative Q-methodology analysis, common barriers will be identified to help guide informed decisions on solutions that can institutionally begin to bridge this racial gap in the healthcare workforce.
