The instructors are not, and have not been, on the same page regarding expectations and service to students. As a member of the Student Affairs Committee (Academic Senate) we were working to unsure that a Pass/No Pass option would be available at the end of the term for any student for whom the radical change to online was proving too difficult - many students had to make this change for 3 or more classes! I surveyed students, who preferred to meet once a week on-line rather than 3x (the norm in person), so there was some loss of quantity of meeting time (but not quantity of material). The quality of meetings was about the same (with gains balanced out by occasional tech snafus). The university gave use little to no preparation. A day after suggesting we hold synchronous class meetings, they sent a message telling us NOT to use WebEx or university-supported video meeting services because this would crash their servers. The message then shifted to ""do as much asynchronously as possible."" It was a mess. Proper preparation --which a colleague of mine actually proposed at UCLA, only to have his plan ignored--would have included training ALL faculty in on-line instruction, and mandating that EVERY class go remote for one week each semester. This would have ensured that everyone, faculty and students, would ""know the ropes""; it would have lessened pedagogical, administrative, and emotional stress around the transition.",3,"""It is what it is."" It worked as well as it could. But I was really shocked to see clueless comments from many of my faculty colleagues. I believe we've been mandated to use, at a minimum, the on-line gradebook in Canvas for several years, and I KNOW we were forbidden to hand out paper syllabi (cost), so presumably everybody should have had some basic acquaintance with our LMS. But no. People were asking ""how do you set up a Canvas shell?"" (They obviously didn't know we get them automatically!) People were asking ""what IS a Canvas shell?!?"" So at one level, it was fine; the classes got taught, everybody finished the semester, no big deal.
