Abstract

After a short presentation based on my research into best practices and my experience as a student, I will facilitate an open discussion on designing and implementing group projects to foster collaboration, creativity, and personal responsibility.

Proposal

Group projects have become a fact of life in most university classrooms, one often met with a great deal of trepidation by both the student and the professor. I intend to give a short introduction of my experience as a student through such projects, and outline ideas I’ve found on how to best design and facilitate them. Most of the time will be an open discussion of what constitutes a well-designed and facilitated project. We will consider questions about the types of topics to suggest, how broadly or narrowly defined, how much initial direction to give regarding project format and organization, as well as how and when to step in to keep the projects running smoothly. Other questions to consider may be about what communications problems may arise, and how should we deal with them, methods to facilitate problem solving and organizational glitches, as well as considering the form and frequency of progress reports, as well as peer evaluations, presentations, and how to construct a helpful rubric. Any questions or problems that come up would be welcome. Our group project discussion can be the start of fun and rewarding collaborative class experiences.
